Archdeacon of Rome under Pope Sixtus II. When ordered by the prefect to surrender the Church's treasures, he distributed them to the poor and presented the sick, lame, and destitute, saying: 'These are the treasures of the Church.' He was condemned to be roasted alive on a gridiron.
Notable Miracles
During his execution by slow roasting, he reportedly said to his tormentors: 'Turn me over; I am done on this side.' His courage converted several Roman soldiers who witnessed the execution and were subsequently martyred themselves.
Historical Assessment
The gridiron tradition is recorded by Ambrose (De Officiis) and Prudentius (Peristephanon). The Bollandists noted the historical core is sound — his diaconal office and Valerian persecution are well-attested — though the gridiron detail may be legendary elaboration.
