COPTIC SYNAXARIUM
St. Macarius the Great
ⲁⲃⲃⲁ Ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲓⲓⲏⲍ (Abba Makarios)
Feast 27 Parmahotep (April 5)
THE ACCOUNT
A camel-herder from Upper Egypt who became one of the Desert Fathers at the age of thirty. He lived in the desert of Scetis for sixty years, founding the monastery that still bears his name, Deir Abu Maqar, where every Coptic patriarch has been consecrated since the 11th century.
THE MIRACLE
He once resurrected a dead man to serve as a witness in a murder trial, exonerating an innocent man accused of the killing. The dead man spoke just long enough to name his real murderer, then returned to his rest.
