Massive beard preserved in the casting. Broad peasant face, strong nose, deep creases. The mask captures the patriarch of Yasnaya Polyana, a man whose face had become as famous as his words. Even in plaster, the force of personality is visible.
CAUSE OF DEATH
Pneumonia, contracted while fleeing his estate at age 82
LEGACY
Wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina, then renounced fiction for moral philosophy. His death at the Astapovo railway station was the first media event—journalists and cameras surrounded the building.
