Maman Brigitte
Haitian Vodou
Domain & Patronage
Death, justice for women, protection of graveyards, curing of terminal illness. Wife of Baron Samedi. The only lwa of apparent European origin — possibly derived from the Irish Saint Brigid brought to the Caribbean by indentured servants.
Traditional Offerings
Rum infused with hot peppers (the defining offering), black coffee, purple flowers, black hens. Her sacred tree is the elm. Offerings are placed on the first female grave in any cemetery.
Status with the Church
Exists within Vodou's complex relationship with Catholicism. Sometimes syncretized with Saint Brigid or Our Lady of Sorrows. Her possible Irish origin makes her a unique case of reverse syncretism — a European folk figure absorbed into an African-derived religion.
