Arinna (Istanu)
Hittite
The Sun Goddess of Arinna, supreme deity of the Hittite state. The king ruled as her earthly servant. All state treaties invoked her as witness. Her cult center at Arinna has never been definitively located by archaeologists.
FATE OF THE CULT
Perished with the Hittite Empire. The Phrygians who inherited Anatolia worshipped Cybele instead. Arinna's hymns lay sealed in the Bogazkoy archives until their decipherment in the early twentieth century.
