Carroll A. Deering
Grounded on Diamond Shoals, Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
FINAL LOG ENTRY
January 23, 1921 — Last confirmed sighting by a lightship keeper, who reported the crew was milling about strangely on the quarterdeck. A crewman shouted through a megaphone that the ship had lost its anchors.
THE MYSTERY
Found with lifeboats missing, personal belongings gone, but the ship's cats remained. Food was being prepared in the galley. Navigation equipment destroyed. Steering gear disabled. Multiple US agencies investigated, suspecting piracy, mutiny, or rum-runners.
FATE
Too damaged to salvage. Dynamited by the US government in March 1921.
