NOMEN OBSCURUM
Tarhu
Hittite / Luwian
“To conquer, to overcome”
Surviving mention
The storm god of the Hittite Empire, whose name element appears in dozens of royal names (Tudhaliyas, Tarhuntassa) but whose myths survived only in fragmentary cuneiform tablets recovered from Hattusa in the 20th century.
Why it matters
For a thousand years he was the supreme god of Anatolia. After the Bronze Age Collapse, he was forgotten so completely that his worshippers' language had to be deciphered from scratch.
