St. Anthony of Padua
1195 - 1231
Biography
Portuguese Franciscan friar born Fernando de Bulhoes in Lisbon. He was one of the greatest preachers of his age, known for his encyclopedic knowledge of Scripture. After his death, his tongue was found incorrupt — a sign of his gift for preaching. His tomb in Padua remains one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Italy.
Legend & Quote
A novice stole his psalter. Anthony prayed for its return, and the thief was seized with such terror and remorse that he returned the book immediately. This is the origin of his patronage of lost things, and the prayer: 'Tony, Tony, look around — something's lost and must be found.'
